* Platelet dysfunction in uremia is probably multifactorial; causative factors include uremic toxins
(hence performance of dialysis immediately before surgery is advisable),
anemia, excessive parathyroid hormone, and aspirin use. Some patients with
chronic renal disease are hypercoagulable; therefore,
one should not assume that all dialysis patients are safe from acute venous thromboembolism.
